ABOUT THE PROJECT

For the Love of Maple is an interview based design project exploring the concept of tradition. This book was created with the intention of capturing the rich historical context of maple syrup production, and to provide a platform for the people behind it to tell their stories.

Spring was always my favorite time of year because it meant that winter was finally over. The days get longer and the weather starts getting warmer. In my house, it also meant sugaring season. I remember the countertops in our house being covered with pots of syrup and empty plastic syrup bottles waiting to be filled. My siblings and I would collect the sap buckets together in hopes that we’d have enough to boil in the evening, and when we did, we’d all gather around the evaporator while my father took care of the technical aspects. Learning about that process together proved to be invaluable, not only in terms of a unique educational opportunity, but also in terms of bonding as a family.

These experiences during my childhood were a direct inspiration for the decision to create this book. The eight maple producers featured here tell about their own candid experiences with maple, and the importance that it holds in their own lives. My hope is that each reader who comes across this book walks away with a broader understanding and a deeper appreciation for this one-of-a-kind craft.
